Join Cape May’s vibrant surfing culture for a weekend, where you’ll be treated to a customized surfing lesson in the waters of Cove Beach. Take to the water with instructors from our partners at EcoVentures, who will teach you how to ride the waves at your own pace and comfort level. Our sister property, the Beach Shack, will serve as the base camp for this exciting experience.

Sweet Amalia Oyster Getaway

Experience the world of oyster farming firsthand with a deluxe getaway in Cape May that pairs hard work with fine tastes.
“It’s a gritty, dirty, muddy job, and perhaps you have to be just a little bit crazy to do it. But there’s also a romance to this work," says Lisa Calvo, owner of Sweet Amalia Oyster Farm.
For three decades, most recently with Rutgers University, Lisa studied shellfish pathology, helping to develop oysters resistant to disease. As a side hustle, she launched Sweet Amalia, which was named for her daughter, who, as a toddler, would slurp oysters straight off the reef. The project began as a learning laboratory for studying aquaculture so that Calvo might better assist other farmers, but, a couple of years ago, it became her full-time occupation. Now, on a six-acre, intertidal plot located off of Route 47, Calvo and her team harvest approximately 3,000 oysters per season.

Please Note: Our Sweet Amalia Oyster Tour will take place on a working oyster farm. Guests will walk about 700 feet from the beach to the farm across sand bars and areas that may have uneven terrain and knee-deep water. We suggest wearing water shoes or an old pair of sneakers that can get wet/muddy, and a change of shoes to ride home in after the tour. Casual clothing is also a good idea, with shorts or pants that can easily roll up. There is no shelter on the farm, so please be aware of weather conditions and prepared to spend the afternoon outdoors. We suggest sun protection (sunblock, hat, sunglasses, etc.), bug spray, an extra layer in case of wind, and a light rain jacket in the event of inclement weather.

From the moment you enter Beach Plum Farm, you'll notice at least a few in-house residents: our free-range chickens. Some stay behind their fence, and some peep out from behind the garden beds, but all are a part of the backdrop at the farm. A sustainable and fowl-friendly poultry program is at the heart of our operation at Beach Plum Farm—and now, we invite you to learn the basics of raising chickens in your own back yard.
Come immerse yourself in our world, guided by Beach Plum Farm’s Livestock Manager Andrew Halbruner on all the ins and outs of properly caring for chickens. The capstone project during your getaway will be to build a beautiful Amish-designed wooden chicken coop with your fellow Rooted guests, with expert instruction every step of the way.
